My philosophy is organized around the concept of “idea-atoms”: abstract concepts that the world, both observable and imagined, may be decomposed into combinations of. Understanding an aspect of the world thus consists of understanding its constituent concepts and the relations between them.
Focused expertise is useful, but is primarily so in the implementation of these ideas. A generally broad knowledge base is a much better foundation for their creation. I’ve spent my life towards the acquisition of both, but it’s all still a drop of water in the vast ocean of the unknown.
I am a computational researcher applying artificial intelligence to medicine by trade, but I take a holistic perspective of knowledge. I write music, I write software, I write poetry, I write philosophy, and I write persuasively. I cook, I prove theorems, I design websites, I start companies around ideas, and I will challenge anyone who believes that these experiences have nothing to offer in my trade!
