Videos and music become popular because people like to minimize their risk of wasting time listening to or watching something unenjoyable. Actually, I suspect something similar lies at the heart of popularity in any context.

I dont think that sounds right, if people want to minimize their risk of wasting time listening to or watching something unenjoyable then wouldnt that make videos and music become less popular? Or are you refering to particular tv shows or bands in a similar way to the example of going a restaurant and order a lasange because you know that you like it rather than trying something new and risk being disappointed?
